Abstract

Magnetic field effect (MFE) on the radical pair generated by the electron transfer from photoexcited [Ru(bpy) 2 (H 3 pzbzim)](ClO 4 ) 2 to methyl viologen in aqueous sodium laurate micellar solution has been studied by using laser flash photolytic technique. It is found that the initial fast decay of absorption remains unaffected in presence of an external magnetic field; in contrast, the free radical yield at longer times increases with increase of field. This insensitivity of the initial decay rate with field is consistent with the singlet spin parentage of the radical pair. The increase of free radical yield at longer times is a consequence of the Δg mechanism of the radical pair theory.
