Abstract

In this paper we review the experimental situation concerning magnetic fluctuations and excitations in quasi-Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (AF) chains, as observed in prototypes of the classical (TMMC), S = 1 2 (CPC) and S = 1 ( NENP, CsNiCl 3) systems, by inelastic and quasielastic neutron scattering. Recent experimental results confirm the prediction by Haldane that quantum AF chains with an integer spin value would display at T = 0 a quite different behaviour than AF chains with a half-integer spin value.
