Abstract

Thc nuclear detonations that formed part of the Argus experiments, reported in an earlier number of this Journal by Porter, and by others [1959], were discussed in a subsequent paper on the hydromagnetic waves due to these explosions [Berthold, Harris, and Hope, 1960]. The purpose of this communication is to report that two of the three detonations produced noticeable effects on the magnetic traces at Hermanus (34°25′S, 19°14′E). In spite of the comparatively low resolution of the recorder, the Hermanus records may be of interest in view of the smaller distances involved. The distance from ground zero to Hermanus was only about 2900 km compared with 5500 km and more for the stations listed in the report by Berthold and his collaborators.
