Abstract

The effect of a magnetic field (0–8kG) on the fluorescence and product yield of glyoxal photolysis induced by 436nm light has been investigated. Both the fluorescence and photolysis are quenched by a magnetic field. The maximum value of the effect on the fluorescence is 40%, that on the reaction is 15% at a glyoxal pressure of 0.05 Torr ( H = 3 kG). The pressure dependence of the magnetic effect has a maximum. The phenomena observed have been interpreted within a kinetic model. The rate constant of 1A u → 3A u collisional transition has been assumed to depend on field strength and glyoxal pressure.
