Abstract

Oscillator strengths have been evaluated for magnetic-dipole transitions in free lanthanide (3+) ions: Ce IV, Pr IV, Nd IV, Er IV, Tm IV, and Yb IV, within ground-state 4fN configurations. The calculations are based on known experimental 4f-electronic energy levels in these ions. The wave functions used are in LS-coupling scheme or in intermediate coupling approximation (Pr IV, Er IV, Tm IV). The obtained values have been compared with other theoretical and experimental results. It has been found that about 2/3 of the values of the magnetic moments in these optical transitions correspond to the ground-state effective magnetic moments in the free ions Ln IV.
