Abstract

Colloidal suspensions of rod-shaped single domain magnetic particles show apeculiar behaviour in ac magnetic fields: a negative optical berefringence at small field amplitudes, a positive one atlarge amplitudes. A theory for this phenomenon, in particular for the transition range, is developed and the results are compared with experimental data.
