Abstract

The magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) or Faraday ellipticity of a YIG (Y3Fe5O12) single crystal for He–Ne laser light (λ=632.8 nm) is measured in magnetic fields up to 45 kOe at temperatures from 100 K through the Curie temperature (560 K) to 700 K. The retardation modulation technique devised here is suitable for measuring small changes of MCD with magnetic fields and temperatures. The values of MCD of YIG in high magnetic fields can be expressed as a simple sum of terms proportional to the sublattice magnetizations.
