Abstract

Magnetic circular dichroism(MCD) of core absorption spectra was measured for various transition metal(TM: Mn, Fe, Co) and rare earth (RE: La, Nd, Sm) compounds. The MCD was not only observed for core excitations of magnetic atoms but also for core excitations of nominally nonmagnetic atoms. Importance of hybridization effects and exchange splittings of conduction bands is clarified. Limitation of the usual sum rules is demonstrated.
