Abstract

The MCD of a gaseous sample of [RuO 4] demonstrates that the lowest energy, intense electric dipole allowed excitation contains a negative Faraday A term. The molecular orbital computation of the MCD A/D ratio by means of the complete 1-, 2-, and 3-center orbital angular momentum matrix confirms that the 1A 1 → 1T 2 band is of configuration change t 1π → e and rules out the other strong possibility, t 2π → e.
