Abstract

AbstractThe magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and absorption spectra of Co2+ ions in MgO, CaO, SrO, and LiF crystals have been measured in the region from 12500 to 30000 cm−1. Most of the features in the MCD of MgO, CaO, and LiF crystals can be attributed to single Co2+ ions at sites of octahedral symmetry. In MgO some additional MCD features produced by Co2+Co2+ pairs are identified by their temperature independence. Although SrO has the same crystal structure as the other crystals, the Co2+ ions occupy trigonal sites (from EPR measurements) and the MCD and absorption spectra reflect this lowering of the symmetry.
