Abstract

Some transformation criteria, based on a magnetic circuit approach, are analysed, aimed to reduce a 3D problem into an equivalent 2D formulation. The method is useful for cylindrical air-gap PM machines, in case of different axial length of PMs and of stator and rotor core portions, or in case of skewing. The paper describes how to modify material properties and/or geometrical quantities, in such a way to obtain correct results by 2D FEM simulations; 3D and 2D FEM results are compared, also developing and analysing corresponding magnetic circuit models
