Abstract

Principal magnetic susceptibilities and anisotropies of manganous acetate tetrahydrate single crystals have been measured between 300°K and 85°K. The results are discussed in the light of the crystalline electric field theory. The mean magnetic moment is independent of temperature as demanded by theory while the magnetic anisotropy varies as the inverse square of the temperature. The Stark splitting parameter in this crystal has been found to be about 1.8 times stronger than in diluted salts.
