Abstract

We have studied the magnetic susceptibilities and anisotropies of a cobalt acetate tetrahydrate single crystal from 300°K down to 85°K. The results have been examined in the light of crystalline electric field theory. It has been shown that in cobalt acetate tetrahydrate the splitting is much higher than in cobalt tutton salts, and the spin orbit coupling is weak compared with the anisotropic crystal field.
