Abstract
Responsive photonic crystals are an important class of smart materials, with their optical properties tunable by applying various external stimuli. Their unique ability to control light propagation promises many applications in optoelectronics (optical circuits, lasers, spectroscopy, and optical fibers), chemical sensors, display technology, and photonic papers. This article briefly describes the principles of magnetic field-guided assembly approaches and summarizes the progress in the magnetic assembly of colloidal particles into responsive photonic crystals under external magnetic fields.
