Abstract

The magnetic anisotropy in thin Heusler alloy Fe 3Si films on GaAs(1 1 3)A substrates is studied using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. The layers exhibit a dominant four-fold magnetic anisotropy with the easy axes along 〈 0 3 1 ¯ 〉 . The magnetic anisotropy constant K 1 of stoichiometric samples is found to be (3.0±0.6)×10 4 erg/cm 3, which agrees well with the reported values for bulk Fe 3Si and Fe 3Si/GaAs(0 0 1) films.
