Abstract

Magnetic anisotropy energy of antiferromagnetic Bi 2CuO 4 ( T N = 42 K) caused by dipole-dipole interaction and anisotropic exchange interaction is studied. By calculating the lattice sum of magnetic dipole-dipole interaction, it is found that this interaction makes the easy direction along the c-axis, contrary to experiment. We discuss the anisotropic exchange interaction on the basis of the orbital level splitting of Cu 2+ ion due to the crystalline electric field.
