Abstract

The compound Y 3Mn 0.1Fe 4.9O 12 has been prepared in powdered and sintered forms and characterized by lattice constant, electrical resistivity and, in particular, hysteresis loop and ferrimagnetic resonance linewidth. The results of these investigations indicate little change in the unit- cell dimensions or resistivity as compared with pure Y 3Fe 5O 12, but show a reduction in the magnitude of the first-order magnetic anisotropy constant K 1, and reversal in sign of magnetostrictive properties. These latter results are supported by the measurements on single-crystal specimens of the same compositions. From microscope and electron microprobe analyses of a polished section, no evidence of second phase was detected.
