Abstract
Non-stoichiometric compounds Na x VS 2 (Se 2 ) were synthesized by reaction from the elements. They crystallize in two different structures: a metallic form with Pauli-paramagnetic behaviour and a semiconducting form with paramagnetic behaviour at room temperature. The semiconducting form shows a sharp paramagnetic-antiferromagnetic phase transition at ∼50 K with a simultaneous first order co-operative Jahn-Teller lattice distortion.
