Abstract

We investigate the structural properties, resistivity and magnetic susceptibility of dilute La, Ce, Pr, Gd, Dy and Lu impurities in ZrAl2. The cerium alloy shows anomalies in volume and in resistivity increment, which indicate a fractional valence. Gd, Dy and Lu alloys of the Zr1−xRExAl2 type show their difference from Ce, large volume, resistivity and susceptibility anomalies for x<0.5 are interpreted by only the partial dissolving of RE impurities in ZrAl2. For x>0.5 the Curie-Weiss paramagnetic temperature of Zr1−xGdxAl2 is analysed and good agreement between the theoretical and the experimental results is found.
