Abstract

Some mixed-ligand complexes of 4-methylpiperazine-1-carbodithioate (4-MPipzcdt) having the general formulae, viz. [M(4-MPipzcdtX)a(L)b]Y (M = Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II); L = 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2′-bipyridyl (bipy); X = H when Y = Cl2,a = 2, b = 1; X = nil where Y = Cl when a = 1, b = 2 and Y = nil when a = 2, b = 1) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductance, infrared and electronic absorption spectral, and magnetic susceptibility measurements at different temperatures. Cobalt(II) complexes exhibit superexchange ferromagnetic coupling of the unpaired spins on adjacent low-spin cobalt(II) species forming long chained polymeric compounds. Nickel(II) complexes with chromophores [NiS4N2] and [NiS2N4] are being assigned cis-distorted octahedral geometries. Copper(II) complexes have been proposed to have six-coordinate tetragonal structures.
