Abstract

This review is concerned with recent magnetic and magneto-optical work devoted primarily to lead- and bismuth-substituted iron garnet films. The influence of these ions on the saturation magnetization, compensation temperature, uniaxial anisotropy, refractive index, optical absorption, Faraday rotation and ellipticity and Kerr rotation and ellipticity is discussed with respect to the composition and temperature dependence and for the optical and magneto-optical properties also with respect to the spectral dependence. The origin of the magneto-optical effects is described briefly and the phenomenological theory is outlined and compared with the experimental results. Achievable maximum values of the Faraday rotation and the figure of merit are estimated which are of interest for various device applications.
