Abstract

Thin films of the intermetallic compound FeRh were prepared by vacuum depositing alternate layers of Fe and Rh and then giving them a diffusion anneal. Magnetization, coercive force, and electrical resistance measurements show the presence of a phase transition at about 50°C. In contrast with bulk samples, the films exhibit a broad transition and a large thermal hysteresis. It has been shown that the transition characteristics are not associated with clamping of the film to the substrate. Codeposited and sputtered films showed little evidence of the phase transition.
