Abstract

The crystal and magnetic structures of Fe III Fe II ( BO 3) O, Fe III Fe II 2( BO 3) O 2, and Fe III Ni II 2( BO 3 O 2 have been investigated by low temperature powder neutron diffraction. Fe 2 BO 4 is an antiferromagnet below T N = 145 ± 15 K and contains ferromagnetically ordered, alternating Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ spins within infinite chains of edge-sharing FeO 6 octahedra, whereas Fe 3 BO 5 orders ferrimagnetically with both antiferro- and ferromagnetically ordering in the chains.
