Abstract

New phosphate solution has been developed to treat the steel surfaces against the corrosion as well as a base for organic paint to improve the adhesion property between the topcoat and base metal. The solution is mainly composed of magnesium phosphate salts containing Ca, Ni and Mn metal ions. Magnesium phosphate layer was successively deposited on low carbon steel by immersion in magnesium phosphate bath. The salt spray test was achieved for painted samples after treating with the phosphate bath to evaluate the corrosion properties of the treated samples. The anti-corrosion properties were improved with phosphate layer. This improvement is related to high corrosion resistance properties of magnesium and good adhesion property of the porous magnesium phosphate layer with the base metal. Magnesium phosphate is a novel treatment to mild and low carbon steel sheet and can replace the zinc phosphate bath.
