Abstract
Abstract White clover (Trifolium repens L.) responded to magnesium sulphate and to calcium carbonate in a pot trial on Whakarewarewa sandy loam with .06 m.e. per cent exchangeable magnesium and a base saturation of 20 per cent. The magnesium and Iime responses were independent and additive. The former response was due to the correction of magnesium deficiency, the latter probably to the correction of manganese toxicity. Leaves showing magnesium deficiency symptoms contained less than .05 per cent Mg in the dry matter, and apparently healthy leaves from the same plants .06 per cent to .07 per cent. Leaves from healthy treated plants showed levels above 0.15 per cent Mg.
