Abstract

Mass spectra of small rare-gas clusters display strong peaks — magic numbers — for certain cluster sizes. Recent molecular dynamics calculations predict that magic numbers should reflect the stability of positively charged clusters. We have calculated the stability of ionized clusters and their concentrations as a function of time. The agreement of our results with the experiments provides a consistent explanation of magic numbers in Xe and Ar clusters.
