Abstract

SARAGUM is a village of some 500 people on the north-west rim of Abelam land, in the Sepik District of New Guinea. The people still live in the stone age economically, but have given up their traditional yam and spirit cults in favour of Christianity. Those old men and few younger men who have not accepted Christianity are afraid to practise the ancient rites associated with the yam and spirit cults because of the opposition of the younger men, and fear of being sent to prison for carrying out such activities.
