Abstract

ABSTRACTThis essay explores the American short story in the context of material culture studies, print culture, and magazine studies. Since the development of the genre has been frequently read in relationship to the expanding magazine business in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the bourgeoning field of magazine studies offers new insights into both the economy and the aesthetics of the form. It also invites reconsideration of the material textuality of fiction within the multimodal environment of periodical publications. Since the digital age has not made print disappear, the material approach to examining the story not only rereads the genre in publishing terms but also highlights its innovative dynamics and how it adapts to the conditions of both online and offline demands.
