Abstract
The ovule contains the female gametes and gives rise to the seed upon fertilisation. Recently, regulatory genes involved in ovule development have been isolated from Arabidopsis and petunia. Here, we will review the current state of our knowledge about petunia ovule ontogeny and concentrate on members of the MADS box gene family controlling the development of this important reproductive organ. Furthermore, we will elaborate on the hypothesis that ovules are separate floral organs based on molecular and paleobotanical evidences.
