Abstract

Within the context of ongoing debate between feminism and postmodernism, this essay adopts a postmodern feminist perspective to examine how pop‐star Madonna uses postmodern strategies of representation to challenge the foundational “truths” of sex and gender. Specifically, the music videos Express Yourself and Justify My Love are analyzed to illustrate gender deconstruction and sexual multiplicity. While such a postmodern challenge may not be amenable to feminisms based on an identity politics, it does bring previously marginalized “others,” such as gay men and lesbians, to the center as a model from which a multi‐faceted coalitional politics can be built.
