Abstract

Centered on the tropical Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean, the Madden‐Julian Oscillation (MJO) is a major atmospheric system that has a strong effect on global weather systems, affecting everything from the rains in Australia to the temperature in the eastern United States. The Madden‐Julian Oscillation is variable, its activity ebbing and flowing on intraseasonal time scales. The MJO presents as a series of events that include eastward propagating systems of elevated wind and precipitation that push out from the Indian Ocean.
