Abstract

Born in Lieben, near Prague, Bohemia, June 15, 1851, she was the first child and daughter of Charlotte (Goldman) and Hans Roessler, the latter a cavalry officer in the Austrian army.1 As a young girl, she learned to sing Italian songs, keep house, cook, and to care for her younger brother and two sisters.2 She acquired a liking for music and dance from her refined mother and from her Jewish grandmother, on her mother's side, and her sense of self-will from her gruff father.3 She demonstrated her independence when very young. Without her parents' knowledge, she cleaned out monkey cages and rode a horse in a traveling circus. Her payment was in food.4
