Abstract
The only contemporary account by an observer of events surrounding the discovery of the double-helical structure of DNA has just been unearthed in the Rockefeller archives. The memorandum (reprinted in facsimile here) is from the diary of Gerard Roland Pomerat ("GRP"), assistant director of the natural sciences programme at the Rockefeller Foundation. Pomerat was at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge visiting its director, Sir Lawrence Bragg, whose research on protein structure was being funded by the Rockefeller. Pomerat's director, Warren Weaver ("WW"), was the first to use the phrase "molecular biology", having been, as Robert Kohler put it, "a midwife at what was later seen to be its birth"".
