Abstract

Abstract A unique weld has been fabricated in HSLA100 steel plate by gas metal arc welding at a heat input of 1.0 kJ mm-1. The initial pass was made over the entire length of the plate (~750 mm). Each subsequent pass was indented approximately 25 mm and then made over the remaining length of the plate. This configuration allowed the consequence of a subsequent weld pass on the prior weld beads to be examined by slicing the welds at appropriate positions along its length. These slices were then polished and the macrostructure was determined. Hardness maps were then determined over the entire weld zone, including the heat affected zone and the base plate. Correlations were then determined between the hardness maps and the macrostructure. A bead on plate weld was made at the same heat input and was used to determine the temperature regimes in the weld as well as the thermal profile from these areas. Relationships are established between the various microstructures, the macrostructure, the calculated thermal ...
