Abstract

Complete urinalysis consists of macroscopic physicochemical testing and sediment microscopy. We performed a complete urinalysis on 1,000 spontaneously voided urine specimens and compared macroscopic data to microscopic data. We contend that for screening purposes, a clear, yellow urine that is negative for blood, leukocyte esterase activity, nitrite, and contains 30 mg/dL or less protein does not require microscopic sediment examination. This kind of specimen represented 46% of all routine urine samples examined, and the false-negative rate for macroscopic physicochemical testing was 1.6%.
