Abstract
Inflammatory signals support the birth of hematopoietic stem cells in zebrafish embryos, but their cellular source in mammals is not known. In this issue, Mariani etal. (2019) report that macrophages are a primary source of pro-inflammatory signals that promote blood cell formation in mammalian embryos.
