Abstract

MacOil is an oil exploration simulation program for the Macintosh that is designed for use in introductory geology and earth-science courses. The program strictly adheres to Macintosh user guidelines and, therefore, is easy to use and employs excellent graphics displays. The goal of the exercise is to discover petroleum deposits by utilizing a variety of exploration tools while remaining financially solvent. Tools include: (1) geologic, gravity, and magnetics maps, (2) drilling, and (3) seismic exploration. A correlation routine is available as is accumulated information about each exploration site in the area under investigation and finances. Frills include a leasing routine which must be implemented before drilling can commence, activities by rival companies (for example, securing leases on sites and thereby removing them from the simulation), procrastination by landowners, and various unforeseen difficulties such as labor disputes.
