Abstract

Graduates perceive a lack of professional experience as a major obstacle in the search for entry job positions. In fact, the job market monitor of the University of Zurich records an increased demand for professional experience in job vacancies. This report therefore is about professional experience. It contains a concept for the recording of professional experience and describes the ways in which university graduates can gather such experience. To this end, seven types are distinguished: apprenticeship, employment before study, student jobs, part-time study, internships at home, internships abroad and volunteering. In addition, it examines whether any kind of professional experience facilitates the transition to the professional world, and whether employers consider every kind of professional experience to be equal. The results cannot confirm that all types of work experience have a positive impact on the transition. However, there is an advantage of parttime study and, in certain cases, an apprenticeship.
