Abstract

Mach’s principle is formulated in the framework of Newtonian cosmology, following in part Raine’s formulation of Mach’s principle in general relativity. A complete characterization of Newtonian universes satisfying Mach’s principle is given. One of the main consequences of our formulation is that if a Machian Newtonian universe is homogeneous, it must be isotropic. This has a counterpart in Raine’s relativistic theory.
