Abstract

This chapter discusses the development of magnetos in the search for strong light sources in lighthouses. It begins with how, in the late 1850s, giant steam-driven magnetos were used in lighthouses for lighting. Magnetos were initially discovered by Floris Nollet, who was able to create a massive magneto by placing five dc compound magnetos together. Finally, Frederick Holmes used magnetos for providing arc lights; his invention was first put to use in the South Foreland lighthouse near Dover cliffs. Similar inventions were utilized in lighthouses in France and battery-operated arc lights were utilized in defense activities. In the defense of Paris, during the Franco-Prussian war, magnetos were used to provide bright light in the battle field, and with the passage of time, more advances in the creation of magnetos led to a less bulky and compact structure of magnetos.
