Abstract

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a problem with retina. A part of the retina called the macula is damaged. Macular Degeneration is the leading cause for vision loss, more than any other eye diseases. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) was found to be the third leading cause of blindness worldwide, accounting for 8.7% of total blindness, after cataracts (47.9%) and glaucoma (12.3%). There are two types of Macular degeneration namely; Wet Macular Degeneration (WMD) and Dry Macular Degeneration (DMD). There are three stages of macular degeneration, they are; Early AMD, Intermediate AMD and Late AMD. This paper proposes automatic screening of dry and wet macular degeneration of eye using the percentage of the white pixels to total number of pixels in the eye image concerned. The proposed method is experimented on 30 eye images of 10 each in the three categories namely; Healthy eye, Wet macular degeneration and Dry macular degeneration.
