Abstract

Its high impact on functional and aesthetical properties makes the polishing operation a crucial part of the manufacturing process of tools and dies. While manual polishing still is the state of the art for many finishing tasks, the laser polishing process offers full automation, high processing speed and unique surface properties. In order to bring laser polishing from laboratory to industrial scale; from flat samples to freeform surfaces; three main challenges have to be met: (i) process adaption for 3D laser polishing; (ii) development of the necessary machine technology; and (iii) development of a user‐friendly CAM‐NC process chain. Facing these challenges, an industry‐ready machine tool implementing the most recent developments in 3D laser polishing was developed and tested in an industrial environment.
