Abstract

Unprecedented technological advances (easy to adopt and integrate) have made factories digitized that continuously monitor and control production and perform tasks as autonomously as possible. Machine learning and edge computing will be essential to the progression of Industry 4.0. The purpose of this work is to review the literature and describe the current state of such technologies and their effect on realizing Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing. Machine learning, due to its predictive insight features, offers decision support in broad areas such as manufacturing, procedures, and processes. The so-called edge computing positively affects operational performance (quality, delivery time, flexibility performance, material cost reduction, and waste and production time reduction). This chapter clarifies these concepts by defining them and explaining their relationship to each other. It also serves as a reference for evaluating machine learning and edge computing as technologies applied to Industry 4.0 in a large-scale survey.
