Abstract
In the present study, multilayer AlTiN/TiAlN coating is used for coating of cemented carbide inserts and those are used for machining of AISI304 austenitic steel with high speed. The cemented carbide inserts used, are fine grained K-Grade (K-20) and the coating is done with cathodic arc deposition technique (PVD). It has been observed that, for the coating thickness of 3.8 μm, the micro hardness of AlTiN/TiAlN was found to be 34 GPa.In experimentation, turning operation is carried out. The range of cutting speed was 100 to 340 m/min. Feed was kept in the range of 0.08 to 0.20 mm/revolution and the depth of cut is kept constant of 1 mm. Influence of cutting speed, feed and tool coating were studied on cutting force and average chip tool interface temperature. The interface temperature of 938°C was observed at 180 m/min cutting speed and feed 0.16 mm/revolution.The cutting speed was the major factor responsible for chip tool interface temperature variation where feed was responsible for cutting force. Cutting force and cutting speed showed inverse proportion with each other and no built up edges were found.
