Abstract

A MONG MACHIAVELLI'S OCCASIONALWRITINGS, there are two marvelous examples of Renaissance rhetoric, one devoted to the theological virtue of charity (caritas) and the other to the moral virtue of justice. The first is known as the Exhortation to Penitence, and an English translation of it has been available since 1965.' The second, known under the title of l'Allocuzione fatta ad un magistrato (Allocution Made to a Magistrate) has not been translated into English until now.2 In this article, I propose to present a translation of this work, together with a brief analysis of its content. Since its subject matter is justice, I have attempted to situate it within the broader context of Machiavelli's thoughts on justice as they appear in his other writings.
