Abstract

or monocytes. IL-8 also significantly increased the migration rates of both T cells and neutrophils. The addition of an IL-8 blocking antibody to the CM significantly reduced the migration of neutrophils, but did not affect T cell migration. Conclusions: Esophageal squamous cells exposed to an acidic bile salt solution secrete chemokines, including IL-8, which can stimulate the migration of immune cells. IL-8 secreted by esophageal squamous cells stimulates neutrophil, but not T cell migration. This study supports our hypothesis that refluxed material induces esophageal squamous epithelial cells to secrete chemokines that attract inflammatory cells. It is conceivable that reflux esophagitis results primarily from the immune response stimulated by reflux rather than from a direct chemical injury to esophageal squamous cells.
