Abstract The data for M13 presented in this paper determine the position of the main sequence over a factor of nearly two in mass, and are of sufficiently high quality to allow a limit to be placed upon the frequency of nearly equal-mass binaries in this cluster. The main sequence of M13 was first detected by Baum (1954). The present study has the objective to look for mass segregation in M13. For this reason, a field which is relatively close to the center of the cluster was chosen. Attention is given to reduction algorithms, aspects of photometric accuracy and completeness, the conversion of magnitudes to masses, color-magnitude and two-color diagrams, and luminosity and mass functions. It is concluded that the color-magnitude diagram of the cluster main sequence shows no sign of a sequence of nearly equal-mass binaries, which would lie 0.75 mag above the cluster main sequence.
