Abstract

Specific force (maximum force normalized to cross-sectional area) of slow- and fast-twitch muscle fibers has been studied from the whole muscle, motor unit to the muscle cell levels during the past decades. However, there is still no consensus regarding fiber type-specific differences in specific force. This is in part due to methodological limitations, such as muscle/motor unit type specific differences in fiber orientation and secondary influences of structural and thin filament proteins on specific force at the muscle fiber level.
