Abstract

LOUIS RAPKINE was born at Chichenich in White Russia on July 14. 1904. His father, who was a tailor, migrated to Paris in 1911, taking his family with him, and after a difficult year, went to Montreal, where he worked in a factory. Rapkine grew up as Canadian citizen. He gained his school education by scholarships. He was a good athlete, excelling letball and swimming. He spent three years at McGill University, supporting himself by working in the summer vacations. When he was twenty, he left Canada to pursue scientific research in France.
