Abstract

In the literature of ichthyology, descriptive and richly illustrated Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische is one of the high points, both graphically and taxonomically. Bloch's work is unique, and probably will for ever remain so were the words used by Gunther (1880 : 14) to describe it. Cuvier stated (1828) that Bloch had probably done more than any other worker of that period to stimulate a liking for ichthyology. For Francis Day (1875—88 : ii) , work marked the begin ning point for the study of Indian fishes.
